Western Railway, Vadodara Division for the first time decided to launch steel girders across six railway tracks at ROB, Jetalpur (Railway Overbridge) in place of pre-stressed concrete girders, weighing 125mt – 135mt each. Five girders fabricated by the contractor and placed on the bridge were required to be lifted and placed in position with the help of suitable capacity mobile cranes. The dimensions of the steel girders were 32m span, 2m height and 0.65m width, weighing 22.5mt each. Since the overbridge passes through the heart of the city and with the space constraints, it was not possible to place the cranes over the bridge due to load restrictions.

After study of detailed engineering work carried out and submitted by Express Transport subsidisry, Express Equipment Rental & Logistics Pvt Ltd (EERL), the Western Railway authorities were convinced that by placing one 180mt and one 200mt capacity mobile telescopic cranes on either side of the railway lane, it is possible to lift and place the girders along the bridge. Required access for both the cranes to place in position after calculation of load bearing capacity of the crane was carried out and at mid-night, both the cranes were placed in position with their counterweights of 35mt each assembled. With proper coordination, from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., first four girders were brought out carefully at about 8m over hang during running trains and at 2.30 p.m. when the power block was given by the Railways, the girders were lifted as per time and motion study prepared by EERL as under:

Though the block was permitted for 3hrs on 8th of May and 2hrs on 9th of May, 2011, the entire job by the Engineers and Experts of EERL were carried out within 2.30hrs in the presence of senior officials of Western Railway, Municipal Commissioner & Mayor of the City of Vadodara, besides other media personnel. For the entire operations, total safety was taken into consideration, including certification of the cranes, wire slings, D-shackles, safety belts for the riggers, etc. Western Railway authorities confirmed that in the history of Indian Railways, 5 nos. of girders with span of 32m were for the first time placed at Vadodara and henceforth on all the ROBs, similar girders will be launched & placed with the help of suitable capacity cranes only. Due to savings in time, the passengers and goods trains started movement, much earlier than the completion of the proposed block.
