PPG Canada & Jordan successfully conclude complex shipment to Iraq |
 |
In an extremely challenging project, PPG Canada, IceCorp Projects, and Jordan, Seven Seas Shipping and Transport Company, has successfully concluded a major shipment of Girder Cranes and accessories from Canada and USA to Iraq. The negotiations between seller and buyer lasted about two years after the terms of shipping and letter of credit requirements did not really meet reality. It took quite a time to get test certificates issued and bookings were constantly deferred as a result of these complex issues. The final carrier choice was Wallenius Wilhelmsen who had vessels over booked to that region several months ahead and any changes and delays threw the schedule even further behind. |

As the port of loading was Baltimore, the break bulk units had be trucked from Montreal to Baltimore for the voyage to the Gulf. There were two large pieces of girder crane that required special road permits - and that was also an issue due to several constructions on the roads in US states. Meanwhile, IceCorp was working frantically in the background with the constant letter of credit changes, vessel re-bookings and cost adjustments. Finally everything was agreed and the cargo loaded. Final permit changes for the largest units necessitated these items to be split and shipped on separate vessels. |

This was a good example for the importance of clear and precise shipping terms, quotations and flexibility for letter of credit contracts for shipments into geographically complex and culturally diverse remote regions. The shipments (comprising a total of 205 tonnes/q,257cbm), having finally sailed from Baltimore, finally arrived in the safe hands of Seven Seas Shipping and Transport Company in Shuwaikh, Kuwait and concluded in Basra, Iraq on behalf of Al Enmm'a for Steel production Co-Khoor Zubeir Basra, Iraq - private sector company. |

In attendance at discharging and unloading operations at both Kuwait and Iraq were Mr. Emad Shahrouri and Mr. Abbas Shoubaky who confirmed that the overall project was concluded on time and on budget in accordance with production availability and vessel availability. Mr. Andy Kristafor of IceCorp, Canada, further advises that complete client satisfaction was achieved under these extremely difficult circumstances, which were further compounded by the thaw ban season in Canada at that time which affected them heavily, coupled with road permits in USA which made it extremely difficult to maintain their tight delivery schedules to Baltimore. |
